Alert: The British Chevening scholarships

What: The British Chevening Scholarships, 2005.

These scholarships enable Indians to study in the UK for a one-year Master's degree or short professional courses.

The scholarship covers the tuition fee and living expenses. The scholarships do not include international airfares.

The categories

The British Chevening Scholarships fall into three categories.

The Long Term (open) Scholarships are applicable for a one-year postgraduate (Master's) study at any UK university and are fully funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The scholarships available this year under this category include:

  • Open Human Rights Scholarships (any subject related to human rights)
  • Open Social Science Scholarships (Economics, Politics, International Relations, Development Studies (including Gender Studies), Psychology and Sociology)
  • Open Science Scholarships (Pure and Applied Sciences (except Medicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational Health and Pharmacy; pharmaceutical study leading to research and discovery of new drugs is eligible)
  • Open New Technology Scholarships (Biotechnology, Information and Communication Technology)
  • Open Scholarships (Art, Design, Architecture, Philosophy, English Literature, Law, Journalism, Fashion Technology, Information Sciences, Humanities, Finance and Accounting and Management).

The Short Term (professional) Scholarships are meant for working professionals and practitioners.

These scholarships invite participation from print journalists, broadcast journalists, corporate managers, environmental managers and women managers.

The Gurukul Scholarships in Leadership and Excellence, which are included in this category, are targeted at leaders from every field of Indian national life including government, industry, finance, law, civil service, academia, research, science and technology, media and NGOs.

The Long Term (shared or joint) Scholarships for a post-graduate course of study are funded jointly by the participating UK institution(s) and other co-sponsors.

This year, there are three programmes under this category. 

  • Any subject relevant to social, economic and scientific development of India at the London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Business Administration at the Cranfield University School of Management
  • Media Management at the University of Stirling, Department of Film and Media Studies
