Don't play the blame game

April 9, 2009
Do not make your manager responsible for your poor performance

'I was not given enough training and opportunities by my manager to perform and prove myself' -- while this might be true in some cases, one year is a long time to waste due to this. It is up to you to perform and prove your capabilities. So, take the responsibility for your performance instead of looking for a way out.

Deal with the problem

If your appraiser comments on a certain area of low performance, ask for specific examples where s/he thought that your performance fell short. If you agree with their point of view, accept it and agree that it could have been handled better. If, however, you do not know how you could have done a better job, ask them for their inputs instead of denying it. This will show that you are open to feedback and keen to improve your professional skills.
