Palolem, Goa

On the southern most tip of Goa, there used to be an unexplored and empty stretch of beach. Until a few years ago. In fact, during a 1998 visit, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were the only visitors!

That, of course, no longer holds true, but Palolem still offers a little more peace and quiet than Baga, Candolim and Calangute.

Palolem is near Canacona. It takes around two hours to cover the 42 km distance from Margao on the slow local bus. The other alternative is to hire a two-wheeler. It is a scenic route, so if you've packed light, you can carry your luggage comfortably and ride to Palolem.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

Palolem is the typical 'time-stands-still' location. Don't make any plans. Just let the day unfold without any pressure of getting anywhere. You can take long walks on the crescent shaped beach and totally lose track of time.

Lazing around, frolicking in the waves or catching up on a good book are equally good options! On one end of the beach is an island you can explore during low tide. Be careful though, the waters rush in fast and there's no way out when the high tide comes in.

There are enough shacks along the beach for beer, snacks and to escape the sun in the afternoon.

You can go dolphin watching on the small fishing boats or go bird watching along the backwaters of Goa.

Try the local cuisine at the eateries along the road perpendicular to the beach road -- most of them will have a good variety of fresh fish items to suit your taste buds.

Of course, there's the good old Goa port wine you can sip while you watch the sun go down on the Arabian Sea.
