Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

If you want to give your lady love an unforgettable holiday to a part of the country she has never visited before, then this might be the one.

Situated in the north-eastern hill state of Meghalaya -- the abode of clouds -- the village of Mawlynnong is a great romantic spot. Located about 90 kms from Shillong, the state capital, it is near the Bangladesh border.

In fact, there's a little cottage being built right at the vantage point from where on a clear day you can see the plains of Bangladesh stretching into the horizon.

Accommodation in this tiny town is limited to a cozy tree house in the village. You need to book in advance and inform the village headman.

Mawlynnong has its own unique claim to fame: it prides itself on being one of the cleanest villages in Asia! Walk around the village and you will surely be impressed. The roads and pathways are squeaky clean. There are bins everywhere to make sure you don't litter this abode.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

The houses are small but impeccably maintained with flowers and floral vines -- inside and outside the gardens. You will see orchids on trees, giving them a bright look. Cheerful bougainvilleas grow everywhere bordering shrubs and bushes and entrances to homes.

The caretaker of the house will happily organise walks and treks around the place. So if you are the adventurous kinds, don your hiking boots and explore the living root bridge. These bridges are unique to Meghalaya. The roots of very old trees merge across a river forming a bridge which you use to cross over. These are roots of living trees and hence the name.

If the trek leaves you tired and hungry, they will serve you food right there at the tree house. Don't expect gourmet cuisine. They have simple home fare that should fill your stomach.

Other things to do while you're there is to walk around and tour the surrounding villages with a tour guide. The people are extremely friendly and always ready to help you with a smile if you need anything.

If you are not the adventurous kind, just laze in the tree house, listen to the sounds of the forest and enjoy the hospitality of the warm and kind people of this lovely village.
