Amboli

Wet and wild, Amboli is an ideal resort for those who prefer a few days of isolation. Located at an altitude of 690 m, Amboli is one of the wettest places in Maharashtra and is covered in a blanket of fog for most of the day during the monsoon.

Remotely located Amboli provides weekenders the luxury of lots of peace. The rains in this part of the Sahyadris are almost incessant, so make sure to pack your rain gear if you wish to explore.

The surrounding hills and valleys of Amboli are covered with unspoilt forest abundant in wildlife. The numerous sightseeing spots -- Sunset point, Parikshit Point, Kavelsad Point and Shirgaonkar Point -- offer heavenly views of the emerald hills. If you are lucky, you will even spot a deer or two in the jungle.

If you are in mood for a picnic then head to Nangartas Waterfall (10 km). Those who enjoy fishing can go angling at Hiranya Keshi. Another off-beat expedition is a visit to the bauxite mines, 10 km away.

A trip to Amboli will be incomplete without a visit to Madhavgad Fort. Located on the edge of the mountain, the fort now lies in a state of ruin. The major attraction however is the breathtaking view of the Arabian Sea.

How to get there

Amboli is 549 km away from Mumbai and 390 km from Pune.
The closest airport is at Belgaum (64 km).
The closest railhead is Sawantwadi, 28 km away.
Drive all the way down NH 17 till Kudal. Just 3 km short of Sawantwadi is Akheri Road junction, from where you take a left on the curving state highway (SH 121) to Amboli.
