Jungle tales

On way back, much to our surprise, a bison that had wandered onto the national highway spied our mammoth-sized vehicle and started charging it. Our experienced guide and driver had by then already geared up the vehicle and so this race was not run.

After exiting the dense jungles we quickly hatched a plan to visit Lava and Loleygaon. These twin hill stations in Darjeeling district are a good retreat for those wanting to give the typical crowded hill station the miss.

The temperature at these towns was 0 degrees C and visibility was less than five metres. The long, winding roads became a nightmare. The fog engulfed them prompting our driver to reduce speed to less than 10 kmph. But the three-hour uphill travel paid off when we viewed the splendour of the foggy slopes that wrapped around the twin hill stations.

After a much-needed treat of coffee, palak soup and momos, it was time to view the hanging bridges and Neora Valley museum. Fresh pugmarks of the Royal Bengal Tiger excited us, as did doing Tarzan escapades across the half a kilometer of hanging bridges in the midst of the Himalayan slopes in Loleygaon.
