The Satvik Diet

This is a very stringent diet.

The catch: No spice. No non-vegetarian food. No milk.

"If you are up to it, this diet can help reduce weight. But it should be followed under guidance," cautions Meera.

The Cut off Diet or Deprivation Diet

This diet consists of cutting out certain food items. Like the following:

~Junk food, pizzas, burgers, oily food, cream: These are high in calories and fat content.

~Desserts, pastries, mithais: These are high sugar foods.

~Grains like wheat and refined flour: These are high carbohydrate foods.

~Chicken, fish, sprouts: These are high protein foods.

Meera suggests charting out this diet with the help of a professional dietician.

The Balanced Diet

This is the diet that is most recommended by experts.

A balanced meal is low in fat and has a moderate amount of proteins and carbohydrates.

Losing weight involves learning to eat correctly, not just cutting calories. If you don't improve your eating habits while on a diet, you will not be able to maintain your weight.

"A balanced meal doesn't mean you should cut off food items that are high in calories. Curb your intake and eat in moderation. And don’t skip meals," recommends Pooja Gupte, consultant dietician at Body Plex Health Centre, Mumbai.

Sushma Reddy (in the picture), model and veejay-turned-actress, says, "I love sweets, but I make sure I eat small portions. This way I can enjoy what I am eating and keep track of how much I eat."

She also says, "Don't break your [fitness] routine. For me, the best form of exercise is dance."
