rediff.com, Movies: Hollywood remakes and womanpower

Fall 2002 promises womanpower, what with Shakti -- The Power (Karisma Kapoor), Gunaah (Bipasha Basu), Dil Hai Tumhaara (Preity Zinta, Mahima Chaudhry, Rekha) and Ek Chhotisi Love Story (Manisha Koirala) lined up for release.

But, there is always room for Hollywood remakes in Bollywood.

Take Deewangee (Primal Fear), Gunaah (Out Of Sight), Kaante (Reservoir Dogs), Shakti -- The Power (Not Without My Daughter).

Also watch out for Vivek Oberoi’s second film Road, after his sensational debut in Company. As for reigning stars Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, audiences will have to wait a while until their films hit the screens. The Bollywood fare this fall:


		*Dil Hai Tumhaara* September 6 Director: Kundan Shah Cast: Rekha, Preity Zinta, Mahima Chaudhary, Arjun Rampal, Jimmy Shergill The trio of Kya Kehna! -- Tips Films, Kundan Shah, Preity Zinta -- come to-gether again. The film is about two sisters who adore their mother and end up falling in love with the same guy. Filmmaker Raj Kumar Santoshi, who pen-ned the story was roped in to direct the film first. However, the director got busy making The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and Kundan Shah (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa) came into the picture.

		*Ek Chhotisi Love Story* Expected in October Director: Shashilal Nair Cast: Manisha Koirala, Aditya Seal Even before its release, this film, about a teenager falling in love with a woman in her mid-twenties, has raked up a controversy. Manisha Koirala filed a case against the director over adding nude scenes in the film (courtesy a body double) without her consent. The court has now issued a stay order on the film till October 5.

		*Shakti — The Power* September 20 Director: Krishna Vamsi Cast: Nana Patekar, Karisma Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai (special appearance) A remake of the gripping Sally Field starrer Not Without My Daughter, which was attempted in Telugu as Anthapuram, Shakti is about a Canada-based Indian girl who goes to a rural village in Rajasthan along with her husband and son. Only to encounter outdated feudal laws and tyranny. Shakti is being touted as a milestone in Karisma's career. Apart from its hard-hitting plot, the film also features Shah Rukh Khan in an author-backed cameo along with Aishwarya Rai in a sultry dance number.

		*Road* September 27 Director: Rajat Mukherjee Cast: Manoj Bajpai, Vivek Oberoi, Antara Mali A young couple elope after being prohibited from seeing each other. The duo hits the road, only to be hounded by a dangerous psychopath. They then find themselves embroiled in an unexpected mess as the plot takes a twist at every turn. Produced by Ram Gopal Varma, Road reflects the adventure and spirit seen in his earlier film, Daud. This film is an important release for Vivek Oberoi, who impressed in Varma's Company.

		*Talaash* October 11 Director: Suneel Darshan Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Pooja Batra An emotional story of a brother in search of his missing sister, Darshan’s films have always offered Kumar ample scope to display his histrionic skills. Witness Jaanwar, Ek Rishtaa, Haan… Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya. Kareena Kapoor is said to play the stereotypical Hindi heroine with five songs and five scenes.

		*Deewangee* October release Director: Anees Bazmee Cast: Ajay Devgan, Akshaye Khanna and Urmila Matondkar A loose adaptation of the Richard Gere-Edward Norton starrer Primal Fear, Deewangee is about a man who gets framed for the murder of his employer. How a sharp lawyer bails him out forms the crux of the plot. The film was initially written with Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgan and Karisma Kapoor in mind. At the time of casting, Sanjay Dutt re-placed Kapoor and Urmila replaced Karisma. Dutt was out too and Akshaye Khanna was signed on in his place.

		*Kaante* October release Director: Sanjay Gupta Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Kumar Gaurav, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali, Rati Agnihotri, Malaika Arora, Isha Kopikkar Although filmmaker Sanjay Gupta denies it, Kaante is inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. After Company, the Bhagat Singh films, Aankhen, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin and Devdas, Kaante is perhaps one of the last big releases of 2002. With its unconventional star cast, sleek production values, an all-Hollywood crew, Kaante is hot property. Scheduled earlier for a September release, controversy about the film’s crew with the underworld has delayed the film’s release to October.

		*Jeena Sirf Merre Liye* October release Director: Talat Jani Cast: Tusshar Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Reema Lamba Kareena is shown chasing Tusshar. The duo play childhood sweethearts who rekindle their romance as grown-ups. While Satish Kaushik helmed Mujhe Kuchh Kehna Hai starring the duo, Talat Jani who directed the late Divya Bharti in Rang, has directed JSML. Also expected this October is Saathiya, starring Rani Mukherji and Vivek Oberoi, directed by Shaad Ali. This film is a remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil hit Alai Payuthey.
