Parliament vs sunrise

April 20, 2009
As Jayalalithaa held her rally on a huge ground close to Chennai's famed Marina beach, located at a distance from residential areas, it did not affect normal life in the city.

But the DMK held its first rally in a small lane in a residential area, Purasavakkom. It turned out to be a nightmarish experience for local residents.

Hundreds of DMK members arrived early to erect hoardings and flag posts all along the narrow street. Branches of trees were cut off and the place was searched thoroughly to ensure that it would be safe for the chief minister to address the public.

On the day of the rally, residents were not allowed to bring their vehicles home. Traffic in many parts of the city, and particularly in Purasavakkom, was thrown out of gear.

The narrow lane, which stank of liquor, overflowed with DMK supporters.

While the AIADMK held its rally with Parliament in the background, the DMK's stage depicting the rising sun, the party symbol.
