The Battle for Maharashtra

No decision on Maharashtra CM yet

October 24, 2004 17:17 IST

The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party are unlikely to hold negotiations on the issue of who will be the chief minister of Maharashtra.

This was stated by Praful Patel, the NCP's representative to end the deadlock. Earlier, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had said that Patel would be meeting Pranab Mukherjee, the chief negotiator for the Congress, at 1600 IST on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Congress legislature party has been convened in Mumbai on Monday evening but no agenda has been set.

State Congress chief Prabha Rau told PTI that the meeting of the newly elected

MLAs and members of the legislative council would be held at 1900 IST in the Vidhan Bhawan (state legislature complex) in Mumbai.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of the Congress and NCP failing to break the eight-day old deadlock over the post of chief minister.

The newly elected MLAs had met once last Monday to pay their condolences to Govindrao Wanjari, the legislator from Nagpur South, who died on Sunday last. At that meeting, the MLAs had authorised Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take a decision on the issue of chief minister.
