JMM spokesman Muktinath Upadhyay said the Congress and its allies got votes in the name of Sonia Gandhi and "now there is no question of having another leader in her place."

Indian Union Muslim League, another ally of the Congress, has also requested Gandhi to reconsider her decision.

Attacking Bharatiya Janata Party for opposing Sonia Gandhi as prime minister, IUML leader E Ahmed said: "The present opposition to Gandhi assuming the prime minister's office is nothing but the deep rooted jealousy against her and hate against the Nehru-Gandhi family."
