Somnath Chatterjee may be pro-tem speaker

May 17, 2004 14:33 IST

Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Somnath Chatterjee is likely to be the pro-tem speaker of the first
session of the 14th Lok Sabha, when it meets to deliver the oath of affirmation to the newly-elected members.

"Since he is the senior-most leader of the party and has held such a position previously, Chatterjee is most likely to be the pro-tem speaker this time too," CPM sources said.

The veteran Marxist was the pro-tem speaker in the 13th Lok Sabha.

Chatterjee has been elected for the tenth time to the Lower House.
