Don't woo Muslims, VHP warns Vajpayee

March 24, 2004 20:19 IST

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Wednesday warned Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to stop making 'overtures' to Muslims.

"The move may prove wrong and disastrous," VHP senior vice-president Acharya Giriraj Kishore said. "We do not endorse the reported speech of the prime minister at Maharajganj on Monday that BJP treated Hindus and Muslims as equals."

"Even Mahatma Gandhi was betrayed by the Muslims despite the fact that he had agreed to partition of the country to appease them," he said.

Kishore said the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence network was spreading in the country and huge cache of explosives and RDX were recovered in different parts, including in and around Ayodhya.

He said Hindu religious leader Sadhvi Ritambhara was attacked and her car damaged in Bhagalpur (Bihar).

Asked about Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani's assertion that Ram Janambhoomi Temple will be constructed after the general election in a peaceful manner, Kishore said he was not aware about any government initiative in this regard.

"The VHP will continue to create awareness among the people for the construction of the temple in Ayodhya. The ongoing Sri Ram Mahayagya is an important programme in this direction," he added.

"Despite all out efforts to woo the community by the BJP leaders, Muslims will not vote for that party," he said.

He said the VHP would not support any political party from its platform. But he said the outfit would support individual candidates, who accepted the eleven-point Hindutva agenda.

The BJP's 'feel-good slogan' was a political one and the VHP has nothing to do with it, Kishore said.

On Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin issue, the VHP leader said it continued to be an important issue in the country.

VHP's media in-charge Sharad Sharma said about 6,000 devotees took part in the Sri Ram Mahayagya on Wednesday.
