'Politicians just make promises'

Viren Rasquinha, 23, has carved a niche for himself as the best man-to-man marker in the Indian hockey team. He spoke to Ashish Magotra:

What is your take on politicians?

Politicians on the national level and local level tend to make a lot of promises just before elections. They promise education for all, employment for the needy and basic infrastructure. But they tend to forget once the elections are over.

Is India really shining?

Yes, in a way it is true. The economy is doing well. As a country we are doing well in sports and in every other field of life. But one gets the feeling that there is something missing. There is so much poverty all around in Mumbai itself. It can certainly be better.

What are the two things that you want changed in our country?

Poverty and general cleanliness.
