Militants kill sarpanch, NC member in J&K

In their continued offensive against political leaders and people associated with the Jammu & Kashmir assembly election, militants on Saturday shot dead a sarpanch (village headman) and a National Conference politician, respectively, in Rajouri and Poonch districts, which go to the polls on Monday, September 16.

Militants entered the house of Sarpanch Haji Mohammed Riyaz in the Shadra Sharif area of Rajouri district and fired at close range, killing him on the spot, an official source in Jammu said. Riyaz was canvassing for a candidate in the area.

In another incident, militants shot dead National Conference member Nazir Hussain in Baghote village of Poonch district on Friday night, the source said. Hussain had joined the ruling party only a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Sadiq, a National Conference leader from Mendhar whose two sons were allegedly abducted by militants on Tuesday night after burning his house down, is also missing, the source said.
