Omar Abdullah resigns from Union Cabinet

Election 2002 National Conference president Omar Abdullah on Monday resigned as minister of state for external affairs, but said his party will continue to remain in the National Democratic Alliance.

Abdullah met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and handed over his resignation.

The NC president said he had resigned because he wanted to strengthen his party in Jammu and Kashmir.

Asked if his resignation had been accepted, he said there was no immediate response from the prime minister.
