Two dissident Congress MLAs
suspended from party

The Congress on Wednesday suspended two sitting MLAs from the party for joining the Nationalist Congress Party and filing nominations against the official party candidates for the December 12 assembly polls.

Dr Hemang Vasavada and Jayant Patel had filed their nominations as NCP candidates from Rajkot II and Sarsa (in Anand district) constituencies, respectively.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders are also making attempts to persuade nine other dissidents, who were denied tickets and have filed their nomination as independent candidates, to withdraw from the fray, a Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman said in Ahmedabad.

The candidates have been asked to withdraw their nominations or face disciplinary action, party spokesman Hasmukh Patel and AICC media cell member K K Sharma said at a joint press conference in Ahmedabad.

Among the nine are four sitting MLAs - Ishwar Bhoiya (Mahuva constituency), Pratap Gamit (Vyara), Pachubhai Kishori (Limdi-Dahod) and Punjaji Harpati (Songadh).

The last day for withdrawal of nominations is Thursday.
