BJP to release first list of candidates
for Gujarat polls today

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday night cleared 135 candidates for the Gujarat assembly polls after a two-hour meeting of its Central Election Committee.

"The detailed list of the candidates will be released tomorrow [Tuesday]," party general secretary Arun Jaitley said after the meeting at Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's residence in New Delhi.

Asked from which constituency caretaker Chief Minister Narendra Modi will contest, Jaitley said, "You will soon get to know all the details about allocation of seats."

Jaitley said the candidates were finalised on the basis of recommendations made by the state election committee of the party.

Nominees for the remaining 47 seats will be finalised after members of the election committee return from Gandhinagar, he said.

The CEC meeting, chaired by BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Jaswant Singh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan, Textile Minister Kashiram Rana, Gujarat BJP chief Rajendra Sinh Rana, party leaders Rajnath Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
