Grenade attack at Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's house

Election 2002

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Unidentified militants fired two rifle grenades at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's residence in Nowgam, on the outskirts of Srinagar, on Friday morning, just hours before the People's Democratic Party chief is to be sworn in as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

"One grenade exploded in air, while the other rifle grenade exploded in the backyard of the house," a senior police officer said.

He said Sayeed and his family members were present in the house at the time of the attack, which took place around 1015 hours.

He said the militants fired the grenades from Chanapora locality.

One cop was injured in attack, he said. Police sources identified the injured cop as Mohammad Yaqoob, the personal security officer of the PDP vice-president Mehbooba Mufti.

Senior police officers have rushed to Nowgam, and search and cordon operations have begun, he said.

The state administration has begun a search for a new house for the chief minister designate in a high security area.

Though no militant outfit has so far claimed reponsibility for the attack, it may be recalled that Al-Umar Mujahideen chief Mushtaq Aargar alias Latram, who was released in exchange of passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines plane in 1999, had threatened Sayeed against entering into an alliance with the Congress party.
