Congress marches ahead in Manipur

Election 2002

The Congress on Sunday surged ahead of others in Manipur with eight seats in its kitty of the 22 results declared so far, while the Federal Party of Manipur was next with five seats in the 60-member house.

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured three seats and the Manipur State Congress Party two. The Manipur National Conference, Manipur People's Party, Samata Party and the Communist Party of India bagged one seat each.

The BJP caused a major upset in the camp of the Samata Party, as its state unit president Meinam Bhorot defeated former chief minister Radhabinod Koijam of the Samata in Thangmeiband by over 1000 votes.

For the BJP, the star winner was former chief minister R K Dorendra Singh, who won from Yaiskul assembly constituency defeating his nearest rival E Kunjeswar Singh of the Congress by 1144 votes.

Among notable Congress winners were former ministers, Ngamthan Haokip, Th Devendra Singh, Brajabidhu Singh, Maniruddin Sheikh, W Leima Devi, Loken Singh and A Aza.

FPM winners were former ministers N Bihari, Tomba Singh, N Biren, L Ibomcha Singh and Salam Gopal Singh.

Other prominent winners were Manipur People's Party president O Joy Singh and former revenue minister Y Erabot of the MSCP.
