Sonia discusses party's debacle in Gujarat polls

December 17, 2002 01:34 IST

Congress president Sonia Gandhi held a meeting with senior party leaders on Monday evening to discuss the reasons behind the debacle in the Gujarat assembly election.

They also discussed the future strategy to confront communal forces.

All India Congress Committee general secretary and in charge of Gujarat, Kamal Nath, Congress Working Committee members, including Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel, Arjun Singh, Pranab Mukherjee, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee chief Shankarsinh Vaghela and state Congress Legislature Party leader Amarsinh Chaudhary were among those who attended the meeting.

The meeting was held at senior leader Manmohan Singh's residence.

Asked if he would take moral responsibility and resign, Vaghela said, "My meeting with the party chief has nothing to do with resignation. We will take questions of the people and confront the new government."
