Modi to be elected legislature party leader on Monday

December 16, 2002 09:24 IST

The formal election of Narendra Modi as the leader of the legislature party in Gujarat is slated for Monday afternoon in the presence of party president M Venkaiah Naidu, who arrived in Ahmedabad in the morning.

Modi, who got a massive mandate in the assembly election, will be sworn in as chief minister on December 18.

Prime Minster Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his deputy Lal Kishenchand Advani are likely to attend the ceremony along with other central leaders.

"The election of Modi as the leader of legislature party is mere formality," Naidu said on Sunday night after a meeting of top party leaders.
