Saffron leaders go all-out to ensure win for mandir advocates

Though the Bharatiya Janata Party has put the Ram temple issue in cold storage, some prominent people associated with the movement are in the fray in half a dozen Lok Sabha constituencies of eastern Uttar Pradesh, and ensuring their victory has become a matter of prestige for Hindu organsiations.

Thus, Vishwa Hindu Parishad working president Ashok Singhal, Ramjanmbhumi Nyas president Paramhans Ramchandra Das and VHP organising secretary Purushottam Narain Singh are addressing election meetings in Faizabad, Gonda, Machhlishahr, Jaunpur, Gorakhpur etc to whip up Hindu passion in favour of these candidates.

The contest for the Faizabad seat, which includes the Ayodhya assembly segment, has become the most prestigious. The BJP has fielded Vinay Katiyar who came into limelight as Bajrang Dal leader during the Ayodhya movement. He won the 1991 and 1996 elections but lost the 1998 election to Mitrasen Yadav of the Samajwadi Party. Now he is contesting for the fourth time and the Hindu organisations have pooled all their might to ensure his victory.
