Vajpayee files 4 sets of papers in Lucknow

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today filed his nomination papers for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, amid unprecedented fanfare.

Starting off in a huge procession from the Uttar Pradesh BJP headquarters in Lucknow, Vajpayee reached the collectorate and filed his nomination at around 1230 hrs.

He filed four sets of papers.

BJP state unit president Rajnath Singh, UP Urban Development Minister Lalji Tandon, former Vidhan Parishad member Hari Krishna Awasthi and Lucknow mayor Dr S C Rai proposed Vajpayee's candidature.

Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, along with the proposers, senior minister Kalraj Misra and other cabinet colleagues, and others accompanied the prime minister to the collectorate.

The prime minister reached Lucknow this morning by a special Air Force plane and drove straight to the state party office, where a '' hawan'' was organised before he left to file his nomination.

He also inaugurated his election office before filing the papers.
