Congress exploiting Mahatma's surname: Saraswathi Gandhi

Saraswathi K Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Dr Kantilal, today accused the Congress party of politically exploiting the Gandhi surname, though it had lost its Gandhian values.

Talking to newsmen, she said the Nehru family had been using the Gandhi surname for political gain over the years. From the time of the late Indira Gandhi, they changed the original Parsi name of Gandi into Gandhi to mislead the people, she alleged.

"The Gandhian Congress is no more and I cannot believe in the present-day Congress," she said. She was confident that A B Vajpayee was capable enough to revive Gandhian values in the country.

Saraswathi Gandhi, who joined the BJP recently, was in the Kerala capital to campaign for its leader O Rajagopal, who is contesting the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat.

Claiming that the Gandhi family was never after power like the Nehru family, she opposed the idea of electing Sonia Gandhi to the post of prime minister as she (Sonia) was a novice in politics without any knowledge of Indian traditions and politics.
