Mirza follows Mufti's lead, quits J&K Congress

The Congress suffered yet another jolt in Jammu and Kashmir when former minister and senior politician Mirza Mehboob Beg resigned from its primary membership and joined the ruling National Conference.

Beg, son of the late Mirza Afzal Beg, who was a close associate of NC founder Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, announced his decision at an election rally addressed by Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah at Charar-e-Sharief yesterday.

Former Union home minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter Mehbooba Mufti and several others resigned from the Congress and formed the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party last month.
