Krishna blesses devotees

Former leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka assembly and chief ministerial aspirant Mallikarjun Kharge was on Monday allocated the coveted home ministry by Chief Minister S M Krishna.

Krishna, while allocating portfolios to the 42-member council of ministers sworn in on Sunday, retained for himself finance and a few other departments.

H K Patil, leader of the party in the legislative council, is the new major and medium irrigation minister, Raj Bhavan officials said.

A new entrant to the Congress, R V Deshpande has been allocated large and medium industries, the same portfolio he held in the previous Janata Dal government.

M Y Ghorpade has been allocated rural development and panchayati raj, the portfolio he held in the M Veerappa Moily government.

Former home minister Dharam Singh, who quit the Congress state unit leadership to make way for Krishna, will be in charge of the public works department, while former speaker D B Chandre Gowda has been made minister for law and parliamentary affairs.

Party spokesman B K Chandrasekhar, a minister of state with independent charge, will be the new information minister while H C Srikantaiah will look after revenue.
