Chamling re-elected leader of SDF legislature party

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was today re-elected leader of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front Legislature Party.

State Public Works Department Minister Dorjee Dazum Bhutia proposed Chamling's name which was seconded by Tourism Minister Garjaman Gurung.

Meanwhile, Chamling has appealed to the people to maintain restraint following reports of post-poll violence from different parts of Sikkim.

In a public appeal, Chamling said ''it has been brought to my notice that a few miscreants are trying to create law and order problems in Gangtok, Namchi and other places in the state with a view to tarnish the fair name and image of our party which has been returned with an overwhelming mandate by the people of Sikkim.''

The chief minister said that he has already issued "strict instructions'' to the law-enforcing agencies to deal with the situation ''firmly and effectively.''

The Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee president and lone Rajya Sabha member Karma Topden, while expressing concern over reports of violence and destruction of property, appealed to all concerned to maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the Himalayan state.

State chief secretary Sonam Wangdi, who is also the state home secretary, said here that although there was no breakdown of the law and order situation in the state, all law-enforcing agencies and police stations across the state have been alerted.
