Congress has suffered losses: Sonia

Special Correspondent in New Delhi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has finally broken her silence on the election results.

In a written statement, Sonia Gandhi has said: "The Indian electorate has once again demonstrated its abiding faith in democracy by clearly exercising its most important political right. On behalf of the Congress party, I express our gratitude to the electorate for the support it has extended to us. The results of the Lok Sabha election has not come up to our expectations and the party has suffered reverses. At the same time, it has also gained support in some areas and our share of the vote has risen.

''The result calls for introspection, frank assessment and determined action. We will attend to it in the coming days. In the meantime, we accept unhesitatingly the verdict of the people. The task our party has undertaken to give itself a new shape and character, and better fulfil the aspirations of the people, has to be pursued with greater vigour. A greater responsibility now rests on all of us to protect and preserve the basic ethos of the country and our party. Let us rededicate ourselves to fulfil these cherished objectives."
