Hung assembly in Maharashtra; Congress emerges as the largest party

With the assembly elections throwing up a hung assembly, political activity in Maharashtra has intensified. While some senior leaders have indicated that the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party may be willing to bury the hatchet, the Sena-BJP too has begun contacting Independents and members of smaller parties for support.

According to unconfirmed reports the Shiv Sena has offered to give its alliance partner, the BJP, the chief minister's post if they form the government together.

The ruling Shiv Sena-BJP combine, which has improved its tally considerably as far as Lok Sabha seats are concerned, has failed to keep up its good show in the legislative assembly.

Out of the total 288 seats, results for which are available now, the Congress has emerged as the single largest party with 75 seats, while the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP combine has won 125 ( Sena 69 and the BJP 56). The breakaway Congress group - the Nationalist Congress Party has cornered 58 seats.

Of the smaller groups the Janata Dal (secular), the Samajwadi Party and the CPM have won two seats each, the Peasants and Workers Party has won five, the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh three, the Republican Party of India, the Gondwana Ganantantra Party, the Native People's Party and the Samajwadi Janata Party have all won one seat each, while 12 seats have gone to independents.

Here are some of the constituency-specific results that are available:

Kripashankar Singh of the Congress has won from the Santacruz assembly constituency defeating his nearest rival Abiram Singh of the BJP by a margin of 9130 votes.

Poshimam Ghulam Mushir of the NCP has won the Shriwardhan assembly constituency by a margin of 9,371 defeating his nearest rival Shyam Sawant of the Sena.

Laxman Rao Tayde of the Congress has retained the Balapur assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Narayanrao Gavhankar of the BJP by a margin of 10,852 votes.

Baldev Khosa of the Congress has won from the Amboli assembly constituency by a margin of 11,468 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Shantaram Ambre of the Sena.

Dada Jadhavrao of the Janata Dal has been declared re-elected from the Purandhar assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Chandukaka Jagtap of the Congress by a margin of 15,911 votes.

Dr Sunil Deshmukh of the Congress has won the Amravati assembly seat. He defeated his nearest rival Jagdish Gupta of the BJP by a margin of margin of 9,870.

Kailash Gorantyal of the Congress has won the Jalna assembly seat by a margin of 3,884 votes. He defeated Arjun Khotkar of the Sena.

Patil Shivajirao Bhayrao of the Congress has defeated Manikrao Jadhav of the JD-Secular by a margin of 22,307 votes in a straight contest in Nilanga.

Prashant Hiray of the NCP has been declared elected from the Dabhadi assembly constituency. He defeated Suresh Nikam of the BJP.

Anees Ahmed of the Congress has won from the Nagpur Central assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Vikas Kumbare of the BJP by a margin of 8,256 votes.

Tukaram Tupe of the NCP has been declared elected from the Man assembly constituency by a margin of 10,930 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Dhondiram Waghmare of the Congress.

Mandakini Kadam of the Sena has won from the Niphad assembly constituency by a margin of just 273. She defeated Shankar Bankar of the Congress.

Shivram Palvi of the Shiv Sena has won from the Sawantwadi assembly constituency by a margin of 1,231 votes. He defeated Pravin Bhonsale of the NCP.

Devendra Fadanvis of the BJP has won the Nagpur West assembly seat by defeating his nearest rival Ashok Dhawad of the Congress by a margin of 9,077 votes.

Kalpana Narhire of the Shiv Sena has been declared elected from the Kalamb assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival of the PWP Kundhik Eknath by a margin of 18,051 votes.

Lahane Haribhau of the Shiv Sena has defeated Durrani Abdul Khan of the NCP by a margin of 6,891 votes to win the Pathri assembly seat.

Padamsinha Patil of the NCP has been declared elected from the Osmanabad assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Vishwas Shinde of the NCP by a margin of 17,214.

Madhukar Chavan of the Congress has been declared elected from the Tulzapur assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Narendra Borgaonkar of the NCP by a margin of 9,787 votes.

In Singnapur, Jadhav Manik Sopanrao of the Shiv Sena has defeated Phule Babasaheb of the Congress by a margin of 10,655 votes.

Sitting MLA Kalyanrao Patil of the Shiv Sena has won from the Yeola assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Narendra Darade of the Congress by a narrow margin of 221 votes.

Anil Gote of the Samajwadi Party has won from the Dhule assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Shardul Bapu of the Shiv Sena by a margin of 3,676 votes.

Vimaltai Mundada of the NCP has won the Kaij assembly seat defeating her nearest rival Devendra Shetye of the BJP by a margin of 45,835 votes.

Ashraf Sayed Sohail of the Congress has won the Trombay assembly seat. He defeated his nearest rival Ratnakar Navkar of the Shiv Sena by a margin of 33,236 votes.

Tukaram Renge of the Shiv Sena has won from the Parbhani assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Ansari Mohamad Liyakat Ali of the NCP by a margin of 7,279 votes.

Vilasrao Deshmukh of the Congress has defeated Gajamgunde Vikram of the BJP by 8, 1533 votes to win the Latur assembly seat.

Dinkar Mane of the Shiv Sena has defeated Patel Ismail of the Congress by 5,809 votes to win the Ausa assembly seat.

Basavraj Patil of the Congress has defeated Ravindra Gaikwad of the Shiv Sena by 13,013 votes to win the Umergaassembly seat.

Arun Gujarathi of the NCP has won from the Chopda assembly constituency with a margin of 2110 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Kailash Patil of the Sena.

Subhas Thakre of the NCP has won from the Mangrulpir assembly constituency by a margin of 3,577 votes. He had defeated Mahadeo Rathod of the BBM.

Prof Yadavrao Shikhare of the BJP has won from the Washim (sc) assembly constituency by a margin of 16,270 votes. He has defeated Kachruji Jumade of the BBM.

Ravindra Mane of the Shiv Sena has won from the Sangmeshwar assembly constituency by a margin of 15,797 votes. He has defeated an independent.

Anilkumar Ahir of the congress has won from the Nandgaon assembly constituency by a margin of 15,334. He defeated Ashok Rasal of the Shiv Sena.

Wanjari Govindrao Marotrao of the Congress has won from the Nagpur (east)assembly constituency by a margin of 10,614 votes. He defeated Mohan Gopalrao Mate of the BJP.

Rekha Khadekar of the BJP has won from the Chikhili assembly constituency by a margin of 8,261 votes. She defeated Pratap Rajput of the BBM.

Rajendra Shingane of the NCP has won from the Sindkheda-Raja assembly constituency by a margin of 19,390 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Nandabai Kayande of the Congress.

Ganpat Kadam of the Shiv Sena has won from the Rajapur assembly seat by a margin of 12,313 votes. He defeated Laxman Hatankar of the Congress.

Varatha Ramji of CPI-M has won from the Jawhar assembly constituency by a margin of 15,891 votes. He has defeated Kanchan Wadu of the BJP.

Prakash Solanke of the BJP has won from the Manjalgaon assembly constituency by a margin of 27,067 votes. He defeated Jagtap Bajirao Sonaji of the NCP.

Jaidattaji Kshirsagar of the NCP has won from the Chausala assembly seat by a margin of 2144 votes. He defeated Keshavrao Andhale of the BJP.

Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde of the BJP has won from the Renapur assembly constituency by a margin of 30,933 votes. He defeated T P Munde of the NCP.

Gyneshwar Patil of the Shiv Sena has defeated Tatiya Saheb Gore of the NCP by a margin of 8,185 votes in Paranda.

Gajanad Ghuge of the Shiv Sena has won from the Kalamnoori assembly constituency by a margin of 1,207 votes. He defeated Rajnitai Satav of the NCP.

Kisan Kale of the BJP has won from the Sillod assembly constituency by a margin of 15,319 votes. He defeated independent candidate Abdul Sattar.

Jayprakash Mundada of the Shiv Sena has won from the Basmat assembly constituency by a margin of 26, 150 votes. He defeated Jayprakash Solunke of the NCP.

Bhaurao Patil of the Congress has defeated his nearest rival Kotker Baliram of the BJP by a margin of 5,928 votes in Hingoli.

Vittal Sapkal of the BJP has won from the Bhokardan assembly constituency by a margin of 22,307 votes. He defeated Laxman Dalvi of the NCP.
