Congress faces rout in Orissa

The Bharatiya Janata Party-Biju Janata Dal combine in Orissa has asked Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang to seek fresh mandate in the wake of what they called 'the total rout of Congress' in the state.

The combine, with candidates leading in 18 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats, is all set to sweep the state. In 11 constituencies, it leads comfortably.

Union Steel and Mines Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik, reacting to the trends that so far have favoured the combine, said Gamang should own moral responsibility and resign forthwith.

Patnaik said the people had voted in favour of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and against the misrule and corruption of the ruling Congress in the state.
