Election Commission lifts Model Code of Conduct

With the holding of elections in all but five of the Lok Sabha constituencies, the Election Commission today lifted its Model Code of Conduct for the central and state governments.

In a letter to the cabinet secretary today, the commission said, ''Now that the voting is over, the Government of India may please proceed with its normal business without reference to the commission.''

The commission also said it had no objection whatsoever about the inauguration of two aerobridges at Bangalore airport. The aviation secretary had raised queries regarding their inauguration in view of the Model Code of Conduct. The commission's MCC prohibiting announcement of new projects or schemes and inauguration of public projects by ministers and politicians had come into effect on July 11 with the announcement of the schedule for the 13th Lok Sabha elections and to the five state assemblies.
