The first election from here was won by the BJP's precursor, the Jan Sangh. After the Lok Dal won this seat in 1977, the CPI has been winning since 1980, its MP since 1989 being none other than Indrajit Gupta. In 1996 he defeated the Congress's D P Roy by 211,000 votes.
