In 1977 the BLD's Asoke Krishna Dutt won the seat, but more interesting is the loser's name: Indrajit Gupta of the CPI. After 1984, when the Congress last won this seat, Nirmal Kanti Chatterjee has been elected from here on the CPI-M ticket. In 1996, Chatterjee defeated the Congress's Ashutosh Laha by 58,000 votes.
