Indrajit Gupta won the seat for the CPI in 1962. Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi won the seat for the Congress in 1971. Somnath Chatterjee won this seat for the CPI-M in 1977 and 1980. Mamata Banerjee won this seat for the Congress in 1984. And in 1989 and 1991, the CPI-M's Malini Bhattacharya won this seat, before losing it to the Congress in 1996. She trailed the Congress's Krishna Bose, Netaji's niece-in-law, by 13,000 votes.
