Ram Nihore won the seat for the JD in 1991, and when he fought the 1996 election as the Congress candidate he ended up in the fourth position with 2.47 % of the vote. The BJP, which had won the seat in 1989, scored in 1996, defeating the SP's Vijay Singh by 72,000 votes.
