Among the contestants in 1996 was Akbar 'Dumpy' Ahmed, contesting on the Congress-T ticket; he came fourth. The winner was Rama Kant Yadav of the SP, who defeated the BSP's Ram Krishna Yadav by 22,000 votes. Congress candidate Ram Naresh Yadav, who had won the seat in 1977 as the BLD candidate, this time came fifth, winning 10 % of the vote.
