Valeshwar Yadav won the seat for the JD in 1989, defeating the sitting Congress two-time MP C P N Singh. The next two rounds, however, went to the BJP, with Ram Nagina Mishra romping home in style. In 1996 Valeshwar contested on a BSP ticket, and came third, behind the SP's Kasim Ali who himself lost by 46,000 votes.
