The SAD's Amrik Singh Aliwal was elected in 1996 winning 45.60 % of the vote, and when you consider that the BJP, which had come third, also took away nearly 100,000 votes, it is clear which way the constituency will vote in 1998. Ludhiana is also among the few seats where the Akali Dal has been winning on and off right from the first election in 1952.
