Between 1952 and 1991, the seat remained firmly with the Congress, with U D Patil representing the constituency four straight times. In 1996, the BJP won the seat in a surprise outcome, since the saffron brigade has never come even second in the fray, Rajabhau Thakre defeating Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress.
