Former railway minister C K Jaffer Sharief won this seat continuously from 1977 to 1991, even defeating George Fernandes in 1984. However, when his kinsman Mohammed Obaidulla Sharief contested on the Congress ticket, the voters brought in the Janata Dal's C Narayanaswamy, in the first time that they voted non-Congress.
