In 1952, the constituency returned Bhagwat Jha Azad, who later became chief minister of the state. In the last two elections the contest has been between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the Congress; Simon Marandi of the JMM defeated Thomas Hansda in 1991, but was paid back in the same coin by the Congressman in 1996.
