Diplomats will be allowed to witness voting

For the first time, the Election Commission will issue special passes to enable ambassadors and other foreign diplomats to witness polling in rural and urban constituencies in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

Stating that the Indian parliamentary elections were ''rightly seen as a major world event,'' Dr Gill said The commission had also received a request from several countries to send their delegations to watch the polling. These include Russia, Uganda, Australia, Thailand and Surinam. ''India has much to show the world where the conduct of this massive exercise was concerned,'' Dr Gill added.
