Bellary contestants down to three

Four candidates withdrew from the Bellary Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka, leaving Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a triangular contest in her first electoral battle.

Besides Gandhi, the others in the fray are former Union minister Sushma Swaraj of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) nominee Mahalingappa.

Those who withdrew from the contest were Tippanna of the Janata Dal (United), Bahujan Samaj Party candidate B Nagraj and two independents, Nazir Hussain and P Narayana Murthy.
