Pak plan triangular with Eng, Lanka

December 26, 2002 23:20 IST
Pakistan are pondering a triangular one-day series with Sri Lanka and England next year if the Indians do not visit the country as scheduled.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Tauqir Zia said hosting a triangular series with Sri Lanka and England was one of the main alternatives being pursued by the Board in case the Indians did not tour Pakistan in April-May next year.

"Our cricket operations manager Zakir Khan has been speaking to the Sri Lankan board and England Cricket Board regarding their availability after the World Cup," he added.

India are due to tour Pakistan to play three Tests and three one-dayers from April 18 under the future tours programme of the International Cricket Council.

But they have yet to confirm the tour as their government has put on ice any cricket relations with Pakistan since May 2000.

Tauqir

said he had held a teleconference with the Indian board and ICC officials and asked them to set a deadline for confirming the tour.

"Right now we have not set a date for them to confirm the tour, but we would like them to do so as soon as possible," he added. "We can't afford to keep waiting for long."

The PCB chief said he was confident that Sri Lanka and England could be convinced to play the triangular series in Pakistan in April-May if the India's tour did not materialise.

The two countries are currently involved in a triangular series with Australia.

Pakistan has been forced to relocate home series against West Indies and Australia to neutral venues as both teams refused to tour Pakistan because of security concerns after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
