England aiming to speed Flintoff's recovery

December 19, 2002 14:37 IST
England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is to undergo an intensive rehabilitation programme to speed his recovery from injury.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said the programme was aimed at getting the 25-year-old Lancashire player match fit by the middle of next month. The World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe begins in February.

"Andrew's rehabilitation is geared to his being able to prove himself properly match fit by mid-January," said the England and Wales Cricket Board's chief medical officer Peter Gregory in a statement.

"His fitness will be tested as rigorously as possible, including simulation of one-day international bowling demands in the nets in about a month if his rehabilitation progresses appropriately in the meantime, and if he is selected for the 15-man World Cup squad."

Flintoff flew home from England's tour of Australia last

Friday after failing to make a full recovery from a hernia operation carried out at the end of August.

"Andrew has made an unexpectedly slow recovery, which is still incomplete despite undertaking programmes typically carried out by other sportsmen rehabilitating from this type of surgery," said Gregory.

"But he has done all that has been asked of him in terms of rehabilitation and we have found no specific reason for the slowness of recovery."

Flintoff, who also has a groin problem, was the fifth England bowler to be sent home from Australia because of injury. Darren Gough (knee), Simon Jones (knee), Chris Silverwood (ankle) and Ashley Giles (wrist) were the others.

England are 3-0 down in the Ashes test series and have lost two of their first three games in the triangular one-day series that also features Sri Lanka.
