'I just focus on the task on hand'

September 12, 2007

Goswami, who is also the vice-captain of the Indian team, said the merger with the BCCI was a boon for women's cricket in the county.

"The merger with BCCI is a big thing for women's cricket. We are getting good facilities similar to men's cricket, and also more money is coming into our game. I am sure that in two or three years time we will have a good platform for women's cricket," she said.

She believes that it was different when she took up cricket, but now any girl in India can dream of taking up cricket professionally.

"Right now, I am a professional cricketer, but some years back I was wondering whether I could make a career in cricket. The job (at Air-India) that I have right now is because of cricket. I can say without any fear that girls can now take up the sport professionally in our country," the 23-year-old said.

The Indian women's team is currently placed second in the world rankings, and their target is to overhaul Australia at the top. Goswami believes that achieving the top ranking would not be easy, and it would need consistent performances over a period of time.

"Yes, the number one ranking is on our mind but it will not be easy to get there. The Australian team has been dominating the game for the last five or six years because they are a good all-round side. For us to reach there, we will need to produce consistent performances. The most important things is that we have to improve our fielding and running between the wickets," the young lass said.

However, as an individual, Goswami has no set targets for herself.

"I have no targets; I just play for the day. I don't look ahead, but just focus on the task on hand," she said.
