A Jalandhar lawyer has filed a criminal complaint against the Indian cricket team for "disrespecting" the Indian national flag after winning the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa.

"The complaint was filed before Chief Judicial Magistrate Varinder Aggarwal under the Flag Act 1871 for violating the flag code of India," complainant Arvind Sharda said.

The magistrate fixed October 23 as the date for recording evidence by the complainant in support of his complaint.

Sahrda said the Indian team had disrespected the triclour, hardly showing respect during the unruly celebrations, which "should never be tolerated".

"The team drenched the national flag with champagne and used it as a casual wear," the advocate alleged, adding that "such a disrespectful act was shameful".
