Indian leg-spinner Yogesh Golwalkar condemned Surrey to relegation from Division One in the English County Championship on Thursday.

Although their final match was still continuing, the loss of the wicket of Scott Newman at The Oval meant Surrey could not overtake opponents Middlesex and escape the drop.

Middlesex entered the match needing to win and earn one more bonus point than their London [Images] rivals, an outcome that was put out of reach by Middlesex's 404-5 declared on the first day of the match on Monday.

Surrey's fate was sealed when Golwalkar trapped Newman lbw for 51.

Their relegation leaves Kent as the only side to have spent every season in the top flight since the championship was split into two divisions in 2000.

Nottinghamshire have already won the county championship after beating rivals Kent at the weekend.
