England [Images] left-arm spinner Ashley Giles, who missed the first Test against Bangladesh because of a hip injury, has been ruled out of the second and final match of the series starting in Durham on Friday.

Off spinner Gareth Batty, who replaced Giles at Lord's but did not bowl a single ball or get a bat, is expected to retain his place when the England side is named on Tuesday.

"Ashley won't be ready for the next Test, but we're hoping he'll be okay for the one-dayers," coach Duncan Fletcher told reporters after England had outclassed Bangladesh by an innings and 261 runs with almost three days to spare in the first Test.

"He is very important now for England and the fact that he has started off the season so well makes it even more frustrating. He was downbeat when he left us the other day."

Giles has revitalised his career over the past year and, prior to the home series against Bangladesh, become an integral part of an attack which helped England win 12 of their last 16 matches against a single defeat.

Fletcher added that surgery could be needed by the spinner, who has cartilage damage to his right hip.

"Long-term it could be that, but it is so far down the line that, at this stage, we are pretty confident things will happen with the treatment he is receiving at the moment," he said.

After the Durham Test, England and Bangladesh take part in a triangular one-day tournament also involving Australia.
